Individual Health Insurance

When you are looking for health insurance you need to deal with a professional, someone who specializes with the type of policy that fits your families needs and budget. It is very important to understand the different insurance options you have before making a decision. There are 3 main types of health insurance; PPO’s, HMO’s, and Traditional Plans.

  • PPO

The PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) is a managed care plan that allows and individual choice of any doctor in a network. You may also see doctors out of network but will pay a larger percentage of the bill.

Typically PPO’s offer an annual deductible of $500, $1000, $1500, $2500 or more. After this deductible is met the insurance company will pay a percentage of the bill (for example they pay 80% you pay 20%). This coinsurance has a maximum out of pocket, and after that is reached the insurance company pays 100% of the bill for the year.

Some PPO plans offer additional benefits such as Co-pays for doctor visits, Preventative care, Maternity Coverage, Disability and Life Insurance

  • HMO

Health Maintenance Organizations represent a "pre-paid" insurance plan in which individuals or their employers pay a fixed monthly fee for services, instead of a separate charge for each visit or service. The monthly fees remain the same, regardless of types or levels of services provided, Services are provided by physicians who are employed by, or under contract with, the HMO. HMOs vary in design. Depending on the type of the HMO, services may be provided in a central facility. HMO’s have strict networks of doctors and the individuals care is “managed” through the Primary Care Physician and by the insurance company.

  • Traditional

Indemnity health insurance plans are also called "fee-for-service." These are the types of plans that primarily existed before the rise of HMOs and PPOs. With indemnity plans there are no networks of doctors or hospitals, and it is a non managed care plan. The fees for services are defined by the providers and vary from physician to physician. These Traditional Plans are set up much like a PPO where there is a deductible, a coinsurance, and a maximum out of pocket. Indemnity health plans offer individuals the greatest freedom of choice.

Self Employed Health Insurance

If you are self employed you look at health insurance completely differently than you do as an employee. Health insurance to a self employed person is a business decision, not a benefit. Being self employed you must have health insurance to protect your business, and now that self employed people can deduct 100% of their health insurance premiums it makes it a lot more affordable.

When looking for health insurance as a self employed individual you don’t have to worry about anyone elses needs but you and your families. This gives you a lot of flexability and options of health plans.
